Are you ready to replace some or all of your windows? When purchasing replacement windows, the buyer should know what questions to ask to understand precisely what they are buying. Here are some areas to ask about when discussing new windows with a window installation company.

Replacement Window Frames

Many window companies don’t like talking about what’s inside their replacement window frames. Many replacement window frames today have foam filling or hollow vinyl frames. Hollow is not good, and neither is foam. These are critical shortcuts on quality. The window frame interior is a part of the window not visible to the homeowner, and that’s why most window companies get away with it.

Such a window installation company assumes that just because you can’t see what’s inside, it doesn’t matter. It, however, does matter, and just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean it’s unimportant. Windows without properly reinforced frames end up warping, sagging, or bowing.

Foam adds no actual strength to the window frame. It might add a tiny bit of energy efficiency to the window, but it’s a slight benefit to the overall efficiency of the window. In addition, most of these foam-filled frames are only partially filled. That means you’ll see a lot of gaps if you happen to open one.

Strongest Window Frame Materials

If you want windows that will not warp, sag or bow over time, consider purchasing windows constructed from one of these materials.

Wood: Wood window frames have stood the test of time. Wood is an excellent insulator in cold climates and can be painted to suit any decor. However, moisture can soak the wood and rot, so consistent maintenance is necessary.

Composite: These frames are a mixture of wooden byproducts and plastics – it looks like wood but acts like vinyl. It’s a good insulator but limited in color options.

Aluminum: Aluminum frames are strong, durable, and inexpensive. It is a sleek, modern-looking material.

Fiberglass: Fiberglass frames are the most energy efficient. This material is highly customizable through styles, colors, and finishes and can also be painted.
